Biography(ies)

Sabrina Ratté is a Canadian artist based in Montreal. Using an array of technical tools, such as 3D scans, analog video synthesizers, and 3D animation, her formal approach serves as the foundation for the creation of ecosystems that manifest across various platforms, from interactive installations to series of videos, digital prints, sculptures, or Virtual Reality. Exploring the convergence of technology and biology, the interplay between materiality and virtuality, and the speculative evolution of our environment, her work is influenced by the realms of science fiction, philosophy, and theoretical writings. Ratté portrays worlds devoid of humans, where forgotten remnants continue to evolve and forge new relationships with the ecosystem.

Ratté’s work has been exhibited in institutions such as the Laforet Museum in Tokyo, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Centre Pompidou in Paris, the PHI Center in Montreal, the Chronus Art Center in Shanghai, the Max Ernst Museum in Brühl, and the Museum of the Moving Image in New York. She has presented solo exhibitions at Gaîté Lyrique in Paris and Arsenal Contemporary Art in Montreal and New York. Notably, her work is part of the collection at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal. Ratté was longlisted for the Sobey Art Award in Canada in 2019, and received the award in 2020.

Roger Tellier-Craig is a composer interested in the interstices between the “real” and its simulations. He is a founding member of Fly Pan Am, Et Sans (with Alexandre St-Onge), Set Fire To Flames and Le Révélateur (with Sabrina Ratté). These projects have seen him tour extensively in Canada, Europe, the United States and Japan, as well as releasing records with Constellation, Locust, Alien 8, Fat Cat, Root Strata, Gneiss Things, NNA Tapes, Where To Now?, Dekorder and Second Editions.

He has composed music for film and various art projects, working with Denis Côté, Brigitte Haentjens, Karl Lemieux, Albéric Aurtenèche, Zaynê Akyol, Projet EVA, United Visual Artists, Lynda Gaudreau, as well as providing the score to most of Sabrina Ratté’s video works. He has also worked closely with the choreographer Dana Gingras over the past 15 years. He holds a certificate in electroacoustic composition from the Conservatoire de Musique de Montréal. His compositions “Duelle” and “Nulle part à trouver” have been awarded 3rd and 2nd prize in the Jeu de Temps/Times Play competition held by the Canadian Electroacoustic Community.

DANS LE CADRE DU CHANTIER IA, SPOROBOLE ACCUEILLE SABRINA RATTÉ ET ROGER TELLIER-CRAIG POUR UNE RÉSIDENCE DE RECHERCHE ET DE CRÉATION SUR LES OUTILS ET LES ENJEUX DE L’INTELLIGENCE ARTIFICIELLE.

AS PART OF THE CHANTIER IA, SPOROBOLE WELCOMES SABRINA RATTÉ AND ROGER TELLIER-CRAIG FOR A RESEARCH AND CREATIVE RESIDENCY ON THE TOOLS AND CHALLENGES OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE.

This long-term residency will last seven weeks.

In the context of this residency, the duo formed by Sabrina Ratté and Roger Tellier-Craig will engage in a visual and sonic dialogue with various artificial intelligence algorithms. This exchange with an ever-evolving otherness will give rise to a work whose definitive form will emerge from the encounter between predetermined initial conditions and unpredictable interpretations. The project will explore notions of hauntology (traces of the past that permeate the present and future), the materialization of psychological projections and the mediated relationship we have with reality.

By combining various techniques such as computer-generated imagery, sound and artificial intelligence, assemblages of artifacts will be created, conglomerates of future vestiges of a fabricated consumer society. These sculptures will evolve within the ruins of familiar places associated with nostalgia, fusions of shopping malls, cinemas and amusement parks.

Notions of the unconscious, nostalgia, anxieties or hopes will emerge from the encounter between familiar places, delirious forms, and the unknown embodied by artificial intelligence. In response to these projections, the latter will generate visual and aural symbols that reflect a changing future both sublime and terrifying. Like an oracle, it will draw from the collective unconscious to inform us about a genesis of what is emerging.
