Opération Sporobole 2023

Opération Sporobole is a sound creation residency that explores the golden age of action films from the 1980s and 1990s in the form of improvisations. Commando, Cobra, Rambo, Die Hard, etc. provide fertile ground for explosive experimentation by the two artists, who will engage in a series of hard-hitting sound raids!

In September 2022, EXEcentrer, a new media and electronic arts organization based in the Beauce region, invited the duo to a short three-day creative residency, culminating in a concert in a former abbey of a Cistercian community in Chaudières-Appalache. Being able to create in a setting outside the daily routine, and having a free schedule (space available 24 hours a day), gave their improvisations an unsuspected direction: a mixture of rhythms, quotations, cinematographic effects, slow constructions, abrasive situations and so on. In three days, they recorded over four hours of improvisation, from which they extracted material for two albums (one to be released in April 2023 on the Tour de bras label, and another to be released in October 2023 on No Type records).

The laboratory-style residency in our sound studio will enable them to fine-tune their work and accumulate enough material to make one or more demos to present to labels and/or filmmakers, choreographers and directors for broadcast in 2024, 2025 and 2026. 

D’Orion and Tétreault have been working together on an irregular basis since 2001. Since 2015, they have released four albums on three different labels, performed at two festivals (Akousma and Mois Multi) and participated in several one-off events. They have also collaborated in extended formations with other artists such as René Lussier and Robbie Kuster, with whom they gave a quartet concert at the Festival International de Musique Actuelle de Victoriaville (FIMAV) 2021. This performance was published on CD in the Disques Victo catalog.
