Jérémie Martineau | Sound Window
July 4-26, 2025
As part of our partnership with the Université de Montréal’s Faculty of Music, Sporobole is delighted to welcome Jérémie Martineau to a research and creation residency for the sound window!
Fragments is a hybrid work combining sound art and French song. It will be the fruit of a series of recordings made in situ at Mont-Orford National Park, in which fragments of songs can be heard sung and played on acoustic guitar. The work will transport us into an intimate sound environment, shared by birds, wind, breathing, tree wood and guitar creaking, and other acoustic micro-events linked to body and place.
I wish to explore a discontinuous narrative form where hybridity is articulated by a detachment from traditional song structures (verse, chorus, predictable harmonic progression) in favor of a sensitive assemblage of textures, suspended harmonies, fragmented melodies and surrounding sounds. This weaving gives rise to a vague, impressionistic discourse that evokes rather than affirms, approaching the experience of memory: blurred, shifting, sensory.
Spatialization will take place in Sporobole’s sound window, but can be adapted to different situations, locations, devices, temporalities and broadcast formats, such as installation, acousmatic concert, album and performance. Each presentation will then become a new actualization of the piece, offering a singular listening experience where the song, fragmented, becomes a space of welcome, resonance and familiarity.
