Sherbrooke participates in the Filer le social event—a major day of reflection and mobilization organized by the GMAQ to develop a social safety net for artists.
The Grande mobilisation pour les arts au Québec invites you to a day of activist reflection on September 20 in several cities across Quebec to lay the groundwork for a genuine social safety net. The Sherbrooke event will take place at Sporobole from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.!
Artists are among the most precarious members of society, with average incomes below the poverty line and no access to social programs. Current cultural funding programs create a perpetual race for funding and do not provide artists with a steady income. We therefore believe that it is more necessary than ever to address the issue of socioeconomic protection for artists.
While the idea of such a program is gaining credibility in the public sphere—supported by leading political and institutional figures—a key question remains: what do the people most affected think about it? What are our real needs? What form should a truly supportive social safety net take? Is expanded unemployment insurance enough? Is the French model of intermittent work suitable for all disciplines? Wouldn’t another approach, that of a minimum income, be better suited to all populations made vulnerable by capitalist exploitation?
This day has two objectives: to learn how to develop critical thinking, and to affirm our own collective conception of what a social safety net for artists should be. We will thus lay the groundwork for making our own demands heard on this subject, which so many actors outside the arts are currently interested in.
The day will combine presentations by experts on these issues and open discussions, with the aim of developing a collective vision that represents the interests of all artistic disciplines.
In line with other issues it has defended or championed, the GMAQ does not want reflections, analyses, and observations on the social safety net to be made without artists. We believe in our collective expertise and in the power of popular education. It is essential that the artistic community be able to reflect on these issues and propose solutions that are in line with its needs.
We therefore invite artists, arts workers, and researchers to participate in this day. Together, let’s define our demands and be the experts of our own realities!
