Biography(ies)

Born in 1973, Mideo M. Cruz is an active cross-disciplinary artist-organizer based in Southeast Asia. His works show strong allegorical images of the social order. In 2011, he became controversial when his installation Poleteismo in the Cultural Center of the Philippines was strongly objected to by the Catholic Church, leading to exorcism rituals and a Senate hearing. Cruz states: “Most dialectical transitions in our histories consist of a traumatic event. It usually takes an unusual experience outside of the usual norms to achieve another sphere of conclusions”. Among his merits are the 2003 Cultural Center of the Philippines Thirteen Artists Award, the 2003 Sungduan Grant and the 2006 Ateneo Art Award.

Jose Tence Ruiz was Editor-in-Chief of Vision Magazine in 1976. He has since been involved in multimedia visual activities such as set design, publication design, book illustration, media presentations, teaching, editorial illustration, painting, art for advocacy, sculpture, installation and performance art. He participated in the 2nd Asia Pacific Triennial for Contemporary Art in Brisbane, Australia (1996), The Havana Biennial in Cuba (2000) as well as the Gwangju Biennial in Korea (1999). He currently works as a multimedia artist and an independent writer/consultant/curator for such institutions as the Cultural Center of the Phillippines, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, The Pasig City Arts Museum, the Neo-Angono Collective and the Ateneo Art Gallery.

Originally from the Philippines, Roy Lu now lives and works in Gatineau. He is one of the founding members of Mindworks, an event that first took place in 1983 and which is now held annually at the University of the Philippines in Cebu. He immigrated to Canada in 2007 and immediately became involved in Gatineau’s art scene. In 2008, he was nominated for the Golden Cherry Award for artist of the year in the Ottawa-Gatineau region. In 2010, he presented his work during the International Symposium of Contemporary Art in Baie Saint Paul and at the Festival international d’art performatif de Rouyn Noranda. Lu mostly works with performance, but he also creates various objects that he later integrates into his actions.
