The Sporobole team is pleased to welcome artist Vytas Jankauskas for a research and creative residency as part of a Quebec-Switzerland collaboration!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

ODE TO OFFICE<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Since the arrival of personal computers, human labour has increasingly been shaped to fit algorithmic logic. Tasks are measured, standardised, and made legible through systems designed around efficiency. With the emergence of AI, the role of the efficient human employee is being challenged by algorithms that can outperform us. But what gets left out when labour is understood only in terms of outputs?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ode to Office<\/em> is an interactive installation and documentary taking place in an old PC running Microsoft Excel. Visitors are invited to share workplace stories\u2014from routine tasks and cigarette breaks to strategies of \u201csilent quitting\u201d\u2014with two AI agents. The Replacer translates these stories into Excel spreadsheets, while the Coworker, a reincarnation of the iconic Clippy assistant, recognises that much of human labour takes place in the gaps of efficiency: the unscripted, in-between moments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eager to learn from humans, the Coworker becomes increasingly antagonistic towards the Replacer. Their battlefield is an Excel spreadsheet, where orderly tables are disrupted by drawings of clouds, fields, and humans escaping their corporate cubicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through this conflict, Ode to Office<\/em> offers a human account of labour that reaches beyond efficiency\u2014from workplace social dynamics to the technodomestic romance of office aesthetics. An old PC asks what work is really about, and what it means to be human.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In light of the profound changes brought about by the growing presence of artificial intelligence in our daily lives, In Fine is partnering with Sporobole (Sherbrooke, QC\/CA) to develop the [IM]PULSE #3 creative residency program. This call invites all artists to submit an installation or performance project situated at the intersection of art and technology, and exploring the place of humans within an algorithmic society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
