MATHILDE LAVENNE – RESEARCH RESIDENCY

The French artist Mathilde Lavenne is in residence in our studio. In collaboration with the Rencontres de la photographie en Gaspésie and Diaphane, she will present her digital project in 2023 in Quebec and in France.

DARK STARS

Dark Stars is a multi-scaled project conceived as an atlas of forms created around light and variations of the luminous spectrum. It explores issues related to animation, cinema and photography, and more broadly visualization tools, through the interaction of “time, light and matter” on fossil and astrophysical objects. Moreover, it addresses the notions of long time and memory to bring science and art into dialogue on issues inspired by a new attention to the living.

The project is named after a natural nuclear explosion first observed on photographic plates in 1937 by Marietta Blau, a forgotten Austrian Nobel Prize-winning physicist. It connects the story of the discovery of radioactivity with the exploration of cosmic radiation that originates from stars using new spectrographic visualization tools.
