To support the diversity of new and critical practices of the present-day that employ, interrogate, reconstruct or revisit the very idea of the Digital and its tools, Sporobole has recently launched a new artist-in-residency program for experimentation, professional development and production in virtual reality. Intended for artists working in every discipline, the goal of this program is to provide artists with a space for experimentation leading to the development of artistic and critical approaches in virtual reality.

The program offers a balanced approach between theoretical and practical training, aesthetic and technological experimentations and development of knowledge concerning the issues, limitations and possibilities of the medium.

This nine-week artist-in-residency program will be held from March to late August and will be taken up by three artists: Geneviève Chevalier (Eastman), Charles-Étienne Brochu (Quebec City) and Thomas Watson (Montreal).

Geneviève Chevalier (Eastman)

Geneviève Chevalierʹs artistic practice adopts primarily documentary and contextual approaches. Addressing ecological, geographical and institutional issues, her work alternates between image-based installations, the creation of exhibitions, as well as writing and more theoretical research. Her interest in images, whether digital, photographic or videographic, manifests itself through installations that combine a variety of elements such as archival materials, documents, interviews and specimens. In the context of her artistic practice, she is particularly interested in the connections between critical reflection and aesthetic contemplation. Geneviève’s approach takes place sometimes in the field, sometimes in the exhibition space, through exploration, observation, research and encounters. Her research is tied to “questions” which become in a sense the engines propelling the work.

Charles-Étienne Brochu (Quebec City)

Charles-Étienne Brochuʹs artistic practice focuses for the most part on digital drawing. He creates ambiguous images in which the use of bright colours contrasts with the gravity of the depicted themes. His preferred topics are sexuality, the accumulation of objects, the connection between presence and absence and the complexity of the world. Brochu creates animation, interactive works, ink-jet prints and web art. For Brochu, these different modes of presentation are opportunities to develop variations on the same theme.

Thomas Watson (Montreal)

Watson’s practice begins with finite objects, locating the materials for his work in the particular constitution of one object. His concept of objects can include thrift shop finds, objects left out in the street, or equally a 3D model found online, or a viral video from YouTube. Regardless of these differences, Watson begin working each object to find a point of departure in the creation of an artwork. Through a process of deconstruction of an existing object he is seeking a deliberate and careful balance in order to not give himself too much importance, so he can relate to the materials and not give the materials too much importance, so he can work freely.
