Biography(ies)

Philippe Hamelin explores the connection between special effects and affect. Using spatial or video montage, he seeks to create poetic dispositions between humans and technological media, calling into question the relations we develop with and through technology. His work has been shown in art galleries and in numerous festivals in Canada and abroad. Following studies in cinema at the Université de Montréal, he completed a master’s degree in fine arts at Concordia University. He lives in Montreal and teaches visual art and cinema at the Outaouais CEGEP.

Julie Tremble’s work, informed by cinema, visual art, literature and philosophy, principally explores the role of narrative in our experience of the world. It examines the way in which emotions, nature, mental states and social interactions are interpreted and understood through processes of narrative construction. Tremble holds a master’s degree in cinema studies from the Université de Montréal. Her undergraduate studies combined cinema and philosophy. Her work has been shown in art galleries and in various festivals across Canada. She received the Conseil des arts et des lettres (CALQ) prize in 2013 for the best work of art and experimentation, which was awarded during the thirty-first Rendez-vous du cinéma québécois. Julie Tremble is represented by the Joyce Yahouda gallery and her videos are distributed by Groupe Intervention Vidéo (GIV). She is General Director at Vidéographe and lives in Montreal.

Philippe Hamelin and Julie Tremble present La Colonne bleue, an exhibition which joins video, 3D animation and sound in a luminous landscape. The assembled works appear as enigmatic fragments of a world in which the real and the virtual come together. Indexes of an outside space that escapes observation, their structure and reciprocal articulation exude a kind of suspense.

For several years the work of Philippe Hamelin and Julie Tremble has been oriented towards virtual construction as narrative conveyance. There affect is never far from a vision, a drama or a manifest or latent fall. The poetic, contemplative and synthetic spaces they construct speak to each other like codes of unknown origin. Out of the points, lines, colours, frequencies, rhythms, inventions and models emerges a science without clear purpose that is connected to a mysterious form of epigenesis which multiplies the sentient out of its own circuits.

In 2012, Julie and Philippe, accepting an invitation from Dazibao, projected La Fontaine et la chute, a program which brought several of their respective works together in a videographic magma. With La Colonne bleue, they have created an experimental spatial narrative in which haiku and science fiction meet. Functioning as a point of contact between incompatible temporalities, their use of the gallery space creates trajectories which merge the distant in the immediate and emotion in the machine.
