Creation and production


François Quévillon was the first artist in residence at Sporobole as part of its research-creation residency program combining arts, pure sciences, human sciences and technologies. His residency took place in two stages in 2014 and 2015. First, he met with research groups from the Université de Sherbrooke and 3IT (Institut interdisciplinaire d’innovation technologique) to inform them of the program and evaluate possible collaborations. Following this period, he worked with Sean Wood and Louis Commère of the Computational Neurosciences and Intelligent Signal Processing (NECOTIS) research group.

Their collaboration was at the intersection of their individual research while being out of step with their usual working methods. They were mainly interested in machine learning and sound mapping. They developed a granular sampling system prototype that analyzed sound characteristics and visualized them in a multi-dimensional space. Using a stochastic process, the system then generated infinite pieces according to the relationships between the sound samples transposed into reconfigurable point cloud structure. Although their research did not lead to a finished work, it fed François Quévillon’s artistic practice.

This BetaLab will establish links between François Quévillon’s residency experience and some of his recent works inspired by technologies used by autonomous vehicles and dash cam compilations. This body of works plays with the tension that arises when confronting the programmed behaviours of mobile robotics with the unpredictable nature of the world. He also collaborated with Étienne Richan, a member of the NECOTIS group, in the development of Algorithmic Drive.

François Quévillon develops an interdisciplinary practice through installation, video, photography, sound and digital technologies. His work explores phenomena of the world and perception by the implementation of processes sensitive to their fluctuations and to the interference of contextual elements. He examines the operational dimensions of images, sounds and other media through the elaboration of systems with unstable parameters, compressed or endlessly evolving spatiotemporal structures. Engaging both scientific observation and a contemplative state of mind, his pieces propose ambiguous experiences through which the ungraspable manifests itself. He investigates how technology affects or redefines human cognition, culture, the environment, our relationships to space, to time and to one another.
